Lake Erie is the oldest and shallowest of the five Great Lakes. It measures 241 miles long and 57 miles wide. Due to the shallow waters, storms can produce unpredictable and often severe conditions on the lake. Human error, collision, fire, explosion, fog, ice, and groundings on reefs also led to wrecks and the loss of life on Lake Erie. The Maritime Museum of Sandusky will discuss 7 famous Lake Erie tragedies.
